She talks to us about how to use cotton and why it is still a staple fabric in the sewing world after so many years.

May explains why this soft fabric is so lovely to work with. Cotton behaves well and doesn’t slide around when sewing it. When pressed, Cotton lays flat. It is a very easy fabric to work with which is why it is great for dressmaking, soft furnishings and craft.

May recommends always pre-washing Cotton fabric before sewing to pre-shrink the fabric.

The 100% Cotton from Fabric Land has a lovely soft texture, but May advises if it lacks in body, to use two layers together to give it some oomph! She also explains how multi-layering gives your creation a firm finish. If you are applying an appliqué design, it is best to sew it onto two layers of cotton to avoid puckering. When making clothes, you may want to only use one layer.
