100% Cotton Batik Fabric

Batik fabric is highly sought after by quilters because of the unique wax-resist dyeing process. This method requires a very tight, high-thread-count base cotton to withstand the hot wax and dyes, resulting in a premium, stable fabric that resists fraying when cut into small patchwork blocks.

Additionally, because the fabric is dyed rather than printed on the surface, the vibrant patterns penetrate all the way through, meaning there is often no “wrong side” to the fabric.

Yes, pre-washing is highly recommended. Because our 100% cotton Batiks are hand-printed using traditional vegetable dyes, there can sometimes be excess dye left in the fabric.

Pre-washing ensures that any loose dye is removed before you sew it next to lighter fabrics in a quilt or dress. We always recommend testing a small swatch first.

Absolutely! While famous for quilting and patchwork, the tight weave and crisp drape of 100% cotton batik makes it an excellent choice for dressmaking. It holds its shape beautifully, making it perfect for structured summer dresses, A-line skirts, and vibrant tops.

Because the wax-resist dyeing process requires a very tight, high-thread-count base cotton, Batik fabric is noticeably denser than standard plain cotton.

To prevent skipped stitches or puckering, we highly recommend using a fresh, sharp Microtex needle (size 70/10 or 80/12) rather than a standard universal needle. A sharp Microtex needle will pierce the tight weave effortlessly.

Pair this with a high-quality, all-purpose polyester or 100% cotton thread for smooth, durable seams.
