Cutting and Sewing Tips: Handling Sequins Without Damaging Your Machine

Sewing with sequins requires a bit of extra preparation, but the results are worth it! Follow these expert tips for a smooth sewing experience:

• Protect Your Eyes: When cutting or sewing sequins, small plastic shards can fly up—we recommend wearing eye protection!

• Needle Choice: Use a Heavy-Duty or Denim Needle (size 90/14 or 100/16). Sequins are tough, and a standard needle may snap when trying to pierce through the plastic disks.

• Managing the Seam Allowance: For the cleanest finish, “clear” the sequins from your seam allowance by carefully snipping them away before sewing. This prevents bulk and ensures your sewing machine needle doesn’t hit too many layers of plastic.

• Care Instructions: Sequin garments should generally be hand-washed in cool water and hung to dry. Never iron directly onto the sequins, as they are made of plastic and will melt; instead, steam the garment from the reverse side on a low setting.
