These fabrics provide excellent structural stability, hold their shape under tension, and handle regular friction without pilling or tearing. For low-maintenance garden furniture that may be left out in sudden rain showers, look for textiles that allow water to pool and bead off the surface effortlessly to prevent internal cushion foam from absorbing moisture.

It depends entirely on the specific material composition and surface treatment. Heavy-duty textiles like our water-repellent PVC fabrics and clear laminate sheetings are 100% waterproof, meaning they form an absolute barrier that completely blocks water from passing through—perfect for protective coverings. Standard exterior canvases and ripstop fabrics are typically classified as highly water-resistant; they are treated with an outdoor coating that easily repels passing showers, though they can slowly absorb moisture during prolonged submersion.

While all textiles exposed to direct, long-term sunlight will eventually experience some colour shifting, specialised outdoor fabrics are manufactured or treated with UV-resistant stabilizers to slow this degradation process dramatically. To extend the lifespan of your handmade garden decorations, scatter cushions, or gazebo curtains and preserve their vibrant print clarity, we highly recommend storing removable items indoors during the winter months or covering them when not in use.

When sewing heavy, dense exterior textiles like waterproof canvas or vinyl on a domestic machine, you must use a thick, heavy-duty Jeans/Denim or Topstitching needle (size 90/14 up to 110/18) to cleanly pierce the layers without bending or skipping stitches. Crucially, you must pair this with a heavy-duty bonded polyester or nylon thread. Standard cotton threads should be completely avoided for outdoor projects, as they will rapidly rot and snap when exposed to moisture and UV rays.
