The primary difference is fabric weight and thickness. Jacketing fabrics are generally lighter in weight (around 200–400 gsm) and provide a supple drape suitable for tailored blazers and indoor jackets. Coating fabrics are significantly heavier (400–600+ gsm), offering dense structure and maximum thermal insulation required for heavy winter overcoats and cloaks.

Yes, lining a winter coat is highly recommended. A smooth garment lining protects the structural seams, adds extra insulation against draughts, and allows the coat to slide on and off easily over underlying layers without catching on clothing.

Wool and wool-blend fabrics—such as boiled wool, melton, tweed, and bouclé—are the gold standard for winter coats due to their natural thermal insulation and water-resistant properties. Heavy synthetic coatings also provide fantastic warmth and durability at an affordable price point.

When tailoring heavy coating materials, use a steam iron with a damp pressing cloth to protect the fibers. Press seams from the reverse side, and use a wooden tailor’s clapper immediately after steaming to trap heat and flatten heavy coat seams neatly without crushing textured fabric pile.
