Suedette Fabric

Suedette is a synthetic fabric, usually made from polyester, designed to look and feel like genuine suede leather. It features a signature soft, napped surface that is pleasant to the touch. Unlike real suede, suedette is animal-friendly, much more affordable, and can be manufactured in a wider variety of vibrant colours.

Yes, suedette is much easier to sew than real leather or suede. It is flexible and can be handled by most standard sewing machines. We recommend using a brand new Microtex or Jeans needle to pierce the fabric cleanly. Because suedette does not fray significantly, you can often leave edges raw or finish them simply for a modern look.

One of the biggest advantages of suedette over real suede is that it is typically machine washable. We recommend a cool, gentle cycle at 30 degrees. This makes it a much more practical choice for clothing and home decor items like cushions. Always avoid the tumble dryer and air dry your suedette projects to keep the nap looking fresh.

There is no difference at all! Suedette and Faux Suede (or Mock Suede) are simply different names for the same material. Suedette is the more traditional term used in the UK textile industry, while Faux Suede is a more modern term often used to highlight that the product is a vegan alternative to animal leather.
