Craft Feathers & Millinery Feathers

Haberdashery feathers are highly versatile decorative accents used across several creative industries. In apparel design and performance wear, they are used to build dramatic volume and movement on stage costumes, dance outfits, and festival gear. In millinery (hat-making), structural plumes and soft marabou are used to embellish custom fascinators and wedding headpieces. They are also incredibly popular for home decor and crafts, such as building dreamcatchers, decorating carnival masks, and accenting luxury floral table centerpieces.

Sewing feather trim (fringe) onto garments is surprisingly straightforward because the individual feathers are pre-secured onto a continuous fabric satin ribbon or header tape. To install it:

1. Pin the satin header tape of your feather trim directly along the right side of your fabric edge (like a sleeve cuff or skirt hem).

2. Use a standard sewing machine equipped with a universal needle and select a medium straight stitch.

3. Sew directly down the center of the satin header tape, ensuring you keep the loose feathers swept out of the way of your presser foot as you glide forward.

4. For items that require frequent washing, you can hand-stitch the trim down or use discrete snap tape so the feathers can be detached before cleaning.

Real feathers are highly delicate and should never be put through a standard washing machine or tumble dryer, as the intense water, heat, and spinning will strip their natural oils, cause the dye to bleed, and permanently ruin their fluffy structure. If a garment with feathers needs to be cleaned, the best method is to dry clean only, or spot-clean the base fabric carefully while avoiding the feather areas entirely. If your feathers get caught in a light rain shower and lose their fluffiness, you can gently revive them by setting a hairdryer to its lowest, coolest setting and waving it from a safe distance to dry and fluff the plumes back out.

Because feather boas are constructed by twisting thousands of natural, fine feathers together around a central cord, light shedding is completely normal—especially when you first take a new boa out of its packaging! To quickly minimise shedding before your big event, take the boa outside and give it a vigorous shake to release any loose, excess down. Afterwards, hang the boa in a warm, dry room or a steamy bathroom for a few hours; the gentle humidity will cause the compressed feathers to open up, relax, and expand to their full, fluffy potential.
