Wool Fabric

Wool is a natural protein fibre that offers incredible benefits. It is a fantastic insulator, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer due to its breathability. It is also naturally water-resistant and highly durable. From a sewing perspective, wool is a joy to handle as it takes a press beautifully, allowing you to achieve sharp, professional-looking seams and tailored finishes.

Boiled wool is made by agitating wool fibres in hot water, which shrinks and compresses them into a dense, felted material. The result is a warm, windproof fabric that has a slight stretch. One of its best features is that the edges do not fray when cut, meaning you can leave hems and seams raw for a stylish, contemporary look on jackets and wraps.

Pure wool is prone to shrinking and ‘felting’ if exposed to heat and agitation, so dry cleaning is usually recommended for finished wool coats. However, many wool blends can be washed on a dedicated cool wool cycle with a gentle wool detergent. We always recommend pre-treating your fabric using the method you plan to use for the finished garment to account for any shrinkage.

The ‘itch’ factor depends on the fineness of the wool fibres and the sensitivity of your skin. While modern wools are much softer than traditional versions, many people prefer to line their wool garments. Adding a silky Habutae or anti-static lining to a wool coat or skirt not only prevents skin irritation but also helps the garment slide on easily and hold its shape better over time.
