Satin Fabric

Duchess satin is a heavy, structured fabric with a more subtle, pearlescent sheen rather than a high gloss. It holds its shape beautifully and has a crisp drape, making it the number one choice for tailored bridal gowns and formal evening wear. Standard silky satin is much lighter, fluid, and flowing, making it better for slinky dresses and soft blouses.

Satin actually refers to the specific type of weave, not the raw material itself. The satin weave creates a highly smooth, lustrous surface on the right side of the fabric and a duller matte finish on the reverse. Satin fabrics can be made from natural silk fibres, or more commonly and affordably, from synthetic polyester and nylon fibres.

Because of its smooth, slippery threads, satin is notorious for fraying as soon as you cut it. To prevent this, make sure you use incredibly sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter. When sewing, you must finish all your raw seams. Using an overlocker, a zig-zag stitch, or sewing enclosed French seams will keep the inside of your garment perfectly intact.

You must use a brand new, very fine needle to avoid snagging the delicate threads and causing runs in the shiny surface. A fine microtex needle or a size 70 universal needle is perfect. Always use fine glass-headed pins or special sewing clips to hold your pieces together, as dull pins will leave permanent, visible holes in the glossy fabric.
