For baby bedding, 100 percent cotton is the gold standard because it is natural, breathable, and soft against delicate skin. It helps regulate a babys temperature and is easy to wash. For blankets, many makers choose a cotton print for the front and a soft fleece or ‘dimple’ plush for the reverse to provide a comforting, tactile experience.

To create a dark environment for daytime naps, you should use a dedicated ‘Blackout’ or ‘Dimout’ lining behind your chosen nursery fabric. Blackout linings block nearly 100 percent of light, while dimout fabrics block roughly 80 to 90 percent. These linings also have thermal properties, which help keep the nursery cool in summer and warm in winter.

Yes, we understand that nursery items need frequent cleaning! Most of our cotton prints, polycottons, and fleeces are machine washable on a cool-to-medium cycle. We recommend pre-washing all fabrics at 30 or 40 degrees before sewing to account for any minor shrinkage, ensuring your cot sheets and curtains fit perfectly after their first trip through the laundry.

For a standard UK cot mattress (approx. 60cm x 120cm), you will typically need about 1.5 to 2 metres of fabric. This allows enough material for the top surface and the ‘pockets’ that tuck under the mattress. If you are making a fitted sheet with elasticated corners, ensure you measure the depth of the mattress to allow for a generous tuck-under.
