Kitchen Fabric

For a low-maintenance, everyday tablecloth, PVC or laminated cotton is the best choice because it can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. If you prefer a more traditional look for dinner parties, a heavy-weight cotton or linen-blend is ideal. These fabrics drape beautifully and can be machine-washed to remove any food stains.

While our standard cottons and drills are durable, they are not inherently heat-resistant. If you are making oven mitts or pot holders, you must use a specialized heat-resistant wadding or ‘Insul-Bright’ layer between the fabric to protect your hands. Never use PVC or synthetic fabrics for items that will come into direct contact with hot pans, as they may melt.

For a professional-feeling apron, we recommend a medium-to-heavy weight Cotton Drill or Denim. These fabrics are ‘stable’ (meaning they dont stretch) and are thick enough to protect your clothes from splashes and spills. They also stand up very well to frequent hot washes, which is essential for any kitchen garment.

Most of our gingham is a polycotton blend, which is designed to minimize shrinking and creasing. However, because kitchen items are often washed at higher temperatures to maintain hygiene, a small amount of shrinkage (around 3-5 percent) can occur. We recommend pre-washing your gingham at 30 or 40 degrees before sewing to ensure your finished project stays the perfect size.
