Crepe Fabric

Crepe is widely considered one of the best materials in the world for dressmaking. Because it possesses a beautiful, heavy drape rather than a stiff structure, it falls over the body’s natural curves elegantly without clinging. It is the go-to fabric for flowing wrap dresses, elegant evening gowns, and stylish bridesmaid dresses.

Crepe fabric can be both! Because “crepe” describes the crinkled weaving method rather than a specific material, it comes in many weights. Fabrics like Georgette and Crepe de Chine are very lightweight, sheer, and airy.

Conversely, fabrics like Wool Crepe or Scuba Crepe are medium-to-heavyweight, offering much more warmth and structural hold for tailoring.

Traditional woven crepe fabric (made from silk, cotton, or polyester) does not contain elastane, but the tightly twisted yarns used to create the crinkled texture do give it a slight, natural “mechanical stretch.”

However, if you are sewing a tight-fitting garment, you should look specifically for “Scuba Crepe” or “Stretch Crepe,” which have spandex woven in for true multi-directional stretch.

Crepe is a truly year-round fabric depending on the weight you choose. Lightweight polyester and silk crepes are highly breathable and perfect for airy summer clothing and warm-weather weddings.

Medium and heavyweight crepes, particularly those blended with wool or thick synthetics, are fantastic for autumn and winter trousers, suits, and long-sleeved dresses.
