Viscose Fabric

Viscose is a semi-synthetic fibre made from regenerated cellulose, usually derived from wood pulp. It was originally created as an affordable alternative to silk. It is highly prized in dressmaking because it is breathable like cotton but has the elegant drape and soft feel of much more expensive luxury materials.

Yes, viscose is notorious for shrinking if not handled correctly. It can shrink by up to 5 to 10 percent during its first wash. We strongly recommend pre-washing your viscose fabric at 30 degrees and air-drying it before you cut out your pattern pieces to ensure your finished garment fits perfectly and stays the right shape.

Viscose can be slightly slippery to handle, so it is best to use plenty of fine pins or sewing clips. We recommend using a brand new, sharp Microtex needle (size 70 or 80) to prevent snagging the fine threads. If the fabric is very fluid, using spray starch can help stiffen it temporarily, making it much easier to cut and sew accurately.

Viscose is one of the best fabrics for hot weather. Because it is made from plant-based cellulose, it is highly breathable and excellent at wicking moisture away from the body. It does not trap heat like synthetic polyester, making it the ideal choice for cool summer dresses, lightweight trousers, and holiday wear.
