Viscose Fabric

Viscose is a lightweight, semi-synthetic fabric made from wood pulp cellulose, celebrated for its smooth finish, breathability, and beautiful fluid drape. Because it feels soft against the skin and doesn’t hold stiff bulk, it is ideal for sewing women’s blouses, summer dresses, skirts, jumpsuits, wide-leg trousers, and garment linings.

100% Viscose is lightweight, silky, and gives maximum drape and movement to flowing garments. A linen-viscose blend combines the natural slub texture and breathability of linen with the soft drape and reduced creasing of viscose, making it a popular choice for summer tailoring, trousers, and structured dresses.

Viscose fabric can shrink slightly on its initial wash (typically 3–5%), so we always recommend pre-washing your fabric at 30°C on a gentle cycle before cutting out your dressmaking pattern pieces. Iron on a low-to-medium heat setting on the reverse side while slightly damp to smooth out any creases.

For a standard short-sleeved ladies’ blouse, you will typically need 1.5 to 2 metres of 140cm-wide viscose fabric. For a midi or maxi flowing dress, pattern requirements usually range from 2.5 to 3.5 metres, depending on sleeve length, skirt fullness, and pattern repeat.
