Lining Fabric

Lining is an inner layer of fabric inserted into clothing, luggage, hats, or curtains. In dressmaking, it provides a neat, professional finish by concealing raw edges, interfacing, and internal seams. It also protects the main outer fabric from body oils and wear, while allowing the garment to slip on and off the wearer smoothly.

The “best” fabric depends entirely on what you are making! For everyday skirts, trousers, and dresses, a lightweight, breathable anti-static polyester or viscose is ideal. For luxury eveningwear or tailored winter coats, a silky satin lining adds a premium feel. If you are lining summer clothing, a highly breathable 100% cotton lawn is the most comfortable choice.

While not strictly mandatory for casual, everyday summer dresses, lining a dress is highly recommended for formalwear, tailored garments, and anything made from sheer fabrics (like chiffon or lace) for modesty. A lining stops the main fabric from clinging awkwardly to your legs or tights, prevents stretching at the seams, and ensures the dress hangs with a perfect, fluid drape.

When standard polyester rubs against tights or undergarments, it can build up static electricity, causing the dress or skirt to cling uncomfortably to your legs. “Anti-Static” lining has been specially manufactured or treated to prevent this electrical charge from building up.

If you are making a fitted skirt, dress, or a pair of tailored trousers, upgrading to an anti-static lining is highly recommended for maximum comfort.
