Buy Metallic Lame Fabric for Costumes & Dressmaking
Working with metallic threads requires a slightly different approach than standard dressmaking fabrics. Before you buy your yardage, here are a few expert tips for handling our lamé:
Preventing Fraying: Woven lamé is highly prone to fraying once cut. We recommend cutting your pattern pieces with pinking shears or finishing all raw edges with an overlocker immediately to secure the metallic threads.
Needles & Pins: Metallic threads can dull standard needles quickly. Use a brand new, fine Microtex needle (size 60/8 or 70/10) to prevent snagging. Use fine silk pins and place them only within the seam allowance, as they can leave permanent holes in the fabric.
Heat Sensitivity: The metallic elements in lamé will melt under high heat! Never use a hot iron directly on the fabric. If you must press a seam, use the lowest synthetic setting on your iron, turn off the steam, and always use a dry pressing cloth.

What is lame fabric?
Lamé (pronounced lah-may) is a type of fabric woven or knit with thin ribbons of metallic fibre. Originally, these metallic threads were made of real gold or silver, but modern dressmaking lamé is typically created by wrapping metallic-coated plastics around a synthetic base yarn like polyester or nylon. This creates a brilliant, highly reflective fabric that catches the light beautifully.
