Polar fleece is widely considered the best fabric for homemade blankets, especially cozy throws and tie-blankets. It provides incredible warmth and insulation without feeling heavy or suffocating. Additionally, because fleece does not fray when cut, it is the perfect material for beginner-friendly, no-sew blanket projects.

Yes, fleece has a natural mechanical stretch. Because it is a knitted fabric (rather than woven), it typically has a moderate amount of cross-wise stretch (stretching across the width of the fabric from selvedge to selvedge) but very little stretch lengthwise. This makes it incredibly comfortable for activewear, hoodies, and children’s clothing as it moves with the body.

No, traditional polar fleece is not made of cotton; it is a 100% synthetic material, usually made from polyester. It was originally invented to mimic the insulating properties of sheep’s wool, but with the added benefits of being much lighter, completely vegan, machine washable, and highly hydrophobic (meaning it repels water and dries incredibly fast).

While standard polar fleece is very soft, “Coral Fleece” or “Cuddle Fleece” (sometimes called minky) is generally considered the absolute softest.
