Working with Suedette: Expert Tips for Cutting, Sewing, and Cleaning

Sewing with suedette is much simpler than sewing real suede, but these professional tips will help you achieve a high-end look:

• Mind the Nap: Suedette has a “nap” (the direction of the fibres). When cutting your pattern, ensure all pieces face the same direction so the light reflects off the fabric consistently across the whole garment.

• Needle & Stitch: Use a Universal or Microtex needle (size 80/12 to 90/14). If you are sewing a heavier upholstery suedette, a Denim needle may be more effective. Use a slightly longer stitch length for a decorative, professional-looking seam.

• Easy Care: Unlike real suede, which requires specialist dry cleaning, most synthetic suedettes can be gently hand-washed or machine-washed on a cool, delicate cycle. To maintain the “brushed” look, avoid ironing directly on the face of the fabric; use a pressing cloth and iron on the reverse on a low heat setting.
