Brushed Cotton Fabric

While regular cotton is smooth and crisp, brushed cotton has been mechanically rubbed on one or both sides to create a soft nap or fuzz. This brushing process traps air within the fibres, making the material significantly warmer and softer against the skin than standard plain weaves.

Yes! In the UK dressmaking community, winceyette, flannel, and brushed cotton are often used interchangeably to describe this cozy, warm material. It is the ultimate fabric choice for sewing winter pyjamas, cozy shirts, and soft backings for baby blankets.

To maintain that beautiful, soft nap, you should wash your winceyette garments on a gentle, cool cycle. Over-washing at high temperatures or over-drying in a tumble dryer can cause the fuzzy surface to pill and form little bobbles. A gentle wash keeps your winter clothes feeling incredibly soft for much longer.
