The ideal fabric depends entirely on the placement and daily usage of the item you are styling. For heavy-traffic items like main living room sofas, dining bench pads, or armchairs, a dense, hard-wearing upholstery fabric or heavy cotton canvas is essential to handle friction. For window dressings and Roman blinds, soft-flowing curtain fabrics or linen blends offer the perfect structural drape. If you are creating accents like scatter cushions or table runners, lightweight printed cottons and polycottons provide excellent versatility and are incredibly easy to sew.

The primary difference lies in the weight, stiffness, and durability rating of the weave. Upholstery fabric is engineered to be structurally dense, heavy, and tightly woven to withstand thousands of cycles of direct friction and stretching without tearing or thinning. Curtain fabric, while still offering excellent substance, is specifically woven to have a soft, fluid hand-feel. This allows the material to drop gracefully from a track or pole, creating clean, uniform folds and gathers that look elegant when framed around a window.

When sewing custom cushion covers, consider both texture comfort and ease of maintenance. For high-use areas like family room sofas, opt for durable woven cottons, dense printed canvases, or plush velvets that can withstand constant leaning and tossing. It is highly recommended to choose materials that are machine washable and to install zipped closures. This ensures you can easily remove the decorative slips and wash them whenever accidents, spills, or dust accumulate over time.

Generally, standard lightweight dressmaking fabrics (like fine viscose, georgette, or lightweight lawns) are too delicate and fluid for structural home decor projects. They lack the necessary weight to drape cleanly as curtains and will wear out rapidly if used for seat coverings. However, medium-weight dressmaking textiles—such as heavy cotton poplins, corduroys, and dense linens—can work beautifully for decorative accent projects like lightweight summer scatter cushions, bunting, nursery wall hangings, and seasonal table dressings.
