Buy Cotton, Viscose & Stretch Jersey Fabric for Dressmaking

Because jersey is a knitted fabric rather than a woven one, it offers unparalleled flexibility. Before you purchase your yardage by the metre, here is a quick guide to our most popular types:

Cotton Jersey: Highly breathable, soft, and easy to sew. It has a slightly more structured drape, making it the industry standard for t-shirts, loungewear, and children’s clothing.

Viscose Jersey: Made from natural wood pulp, viscose jersey is silkier and heavier than cotton. It features a cool, slinky feel and a fluid drape that is perfect for wrap dresses and elegant summer tops.

Ponte Roma (Double Knit): A much thicker, double-knit jersey that is completely opaque and highly stable. It is the ultimate choice for structured winter skirts, tailored stretch trousers, and blazers.

Sewing Tip: Never use a standard needle! Always sew jersey with a Ballpoint or Stretch needle, and use a zig-zag or stretch stitch on your machine to ensure your seams stretch with the fabric without snapping.

What kind of fabric is jersey?

Jersey is a “knitted” fabric, as opposed to a “woven” fabric. This means it is created by interlocking loops of yarn, which gives the fabric its signature natural stretch and incredibly soft drape.

Originally manufactured from wool on the Channel Island of Jersey, modern dressmaking jersey is now most commonly made from cotton, viscose, or synthetic blends. Because it is knitted, it does not fray when cut, though the raw edges may naturally curl.
