Cushion Fabric

The best fabric depends on where and how the cushion will be used. For high-traffic family sofas, dining pads, or bench seats, tightly woven cotton canvases and polycotton blends are ideal because they resist friction and pilling. For decorative accent pillows, bedroom styling, or formal sitting rooms, luxury velvets, textured chenilles, and heavy linen-looks are highly recommended as they add premium depth, rich colour dimensions, and sophisticated style to the space.

To calculate your required yardage for a standard square cushion (such as a 45cm x 45cm insert), you will typically need a 50cm x 50cm square of fabric for both the front and back panels, meaning a single half-metre cut is usually sufficient. If you are sewing a money-saving “envelope” style cushion closure, you will need to allow extra length for the overlapping back flaps. Always check the width of the fabric roll (usually 140cm or wider), as you can often cut multiple cushion panels out of a single linear metre.

Most of our standard cotton canvas and synthetic velvet cushion fabrics can be easily machine washed on a gentle 30°C or 40°C cycle. However, because natural cotton and linen fibres are prone to minor shrinkage during their first wash, it is highly recommended to pre-wash your fabric yardage before cutting out your patterns. To make maintenance simple, always install a removable closure like a zip or a button fly so you can easily take the covers off for regular cleaning.

While installing a hidden zip gives the most professional, high-end look and keeps the insert perfectly secure, it is not strictly mandatory. If you are a sewing beginner or want a quick project, you can easily create an envelope enclosure, which uses overlapping fabric panels at the back to allow the cushion pad to slide in and out. However, for deep box cushions, thick foam bench pads, or heavy upholstery materials, a strong nylon zip is highly recommended to prevent the seams from pulling open under pressure.
