Furnishing Fabrics

Furnishing fabric is specifically designed for home interiors. It is generally wider, heavier, and more durable than dressmaking fabric. It is woven to withstand higher levels of friction and sunlight exposure, making it ideal for items like curtains and cushions that need to hold their shape and colour over long periods of time.

Many of our furnishing fabrics are heavy enough for light upholstery, such as recovering dining chair pads or headboards. However, for full furniture items like sofas, you should ensure the fabric is durable enough for heavy use. Please note that our fabrics are not pre-treated with fire-retardant chemicals; for domestic furniture in the UK, we recommend using a fire-retardant interlining.

To calculate curtain fabric, you first need to measure the width of your curtain track or pole and the desired length (drop). As a general rule, you should allow for ‘double fullness’, meaning the fabric width should be roughly twice the width of the pole. Dont forget to add extra for hems and pattern matching if you have chosen a large print!

Extra-wide fabrics (often 280cm or wider) are a game-changer for large windows and patio doors. By choosing a wider fabric, you can often make your curtains or blinds from a single continuous piece of material. This eliminates unsightly vertical seams, providing a much cleaner, more professional, and luxury ’boutique’ look to your window treatments.
