For a classic, sweeping cloak that’s ideal for a Halloween costume, we highly recommend using satin, liquid foil, or lightweight lining fabrics. If you are designing a cosy cape for outdoor trick-or-treating, our soft anti-pill fleece or velvet offers excellent warmth. For a completely fray-free costume that doesn’t require hemming, craft felt is the ultimate quick-fix choice.

For a traditional draped effect, white cotton sheeting or inexpensive polycotton are your best staples. If you want a more ethereal, floating look that moves in the wind, try layering white dress net, sheer voile, or organza over a solid white base layer.

This depends on the length of the skirt and how much volume you want to achieve. For a child’s tutu, you will typically need 2 to 4 metres of standard dress net. For an adult-sized, highly voluminous petticoat or tutu, you should plan for anywhere between 5 to 10 metres. Because net is very sheer, more layers equal a richer, puffier look.
