Jersey Fabric

Jersey is a “knitted” fabric, as opposed to a “woven” fabric. This means it is created by interlocking loops of yarn, which gives the fabric its signature natural stretch and incredibly soft drape.

Originally manufactured from wool on the Channel Island of Jersey, modern dressmaking jersey is now most commonly made from cotton, viscose, or synthetic blends. Because it is knitted, it does not fray when cut, though the raw edges may naturally curl.

Not always! While 100% cotton jersey is available and highly breathable, the vast majority of modern dressmaking jersey includes a small percentage of elastane or spandex (typically between 3% and 5%).

This added stretch gives the fabric “recovery,” meaning it will bounce back into shape rather than bagging at the knees or elbows after wearing. There are also incredibly popular jerseys made from 100% viscose or polyester blends.

Because of its inherent stretch, breathability, and comfort, jersey is the ultimate fabric for casual and fitted clothing. Lightweight cotton and viscose jerseys are the standard materials used for t-shirts, leggings, wrap dresses, and activewear.

Heavier double-knit jerseys, such as Ponte Roma, are used for more structured, smart-casual garments like blazers, pencil skirts, and stretch-fit trousers.
