Upholstery Fabric

The primary difference lies in their density, weight, and structural weave tightness. Upholstery fabric is heavily engineered to withstand repetitive physical friction, pressure, and surface wear; it is often rated using a Martindale rub count to guarantee it won’t thin out or pill over time. Curtain fabric, conversely, is manufactured to be lighter and more flexible so it can drape, fold, and gather gracefully next to a window. Using curtain fabric on a heavily used sofa will rapidly cause the seams to pucker and the fibres to wear away.

It is generally not recommended for main seating items like sofas or armchairs, as dressmaking and drapery fabrics lack the structural thickness required to handle daily weight and friction. However, you can successfully use lighter decorative fabrics for low-traffic, accent-only upholstery projects. Items such as ornamental bedroom headboards, decorative footstools, or display-only cushions can be covered in standard fabrics, provided they are pulled tautly over a robust foam backing and are not subject to heavy, repetitive use.

For removable elements like cushion covers and seat pads, the simplest solution is to install strong nylon zips so they can be easily slipped off for a low-temperature, gentle machine wash. For fixed furniture upholstery that cannot be removed, regular maintenance is key. Vacuum the surface weekly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust and crumbs that can abrade the fibres. For accidental spills, spot-clean the area immediately using a clean, damp cloth and a mild, fabric-safe detergent, taking care not to soak the internal foam.

When sewing dense upholstery textiles like thick canvases, velvets, or faux leathers on a domestic sewing machine, you must upgrade to a heavy-duty Jeans/Denim or Leather needle (size 90/14 up to 110/18). Standard universal needles are too thin and flexible; they will bend, skip stitches, or snap instantly when trying to pierce multiple thick layers. Pair your heavy needle with a strong, bonded polyester or topstitching thread to ensure your structural seams can handle maximum tension without splitting over time.
